Swindon Art Gallery / STEAM Railway Museum / Designer Outlet
January 30 at 9:45 am - 6:30 pm£10.50
A relatively short outing, appropriate to the time of year.
The Swindon Collection of Modern British Art at the Swindon Gallery is highly regarded, comprising some 600 paintings, drawings and prints, 300 studio ceramics and a few sculptures. Well known names represented in the Collection include Ben Nicholson, Frost, Sutherland, John Nash, Duncan Grant, Hodgkin, Hilton, Freud, Augustus and Gwen John, Moore, Sickert and Michael Craig-Martin.
The Museum is free. (It should be noted that there is no lift to the upper floors and no on-site refreshment facilities). Maybe bring a flask of coffee?
At 12.30 we move on – either to the Swindon Designer Outlet or the adjacent STEAM Railway Museum on Kemble Drive. For those wishing to find lunch and shop the Designer Outlet has all you require… (discounted prices on a full range of well-known brands). For Railway buffs the opportunity to view the former flagship of the GWR, the King George V (in pristine condition and featured in a current exhibition –‘A Locomotive Legend’) might be tempting: Adults £8.90/ Seniors £7.15. A range of food and drink available at the Platform One Café.
