Southampton has a rich medieval, maritime and aviation heritage, which has shaped the city and its people. Its cultural places to explore are initially the Southampton City Art Gallery where eight centuries of western art from the Renaissance to the present day can be enjoyed. The Gallery is free entry to the public.
Next door is the Sea City Museum where Southampton’s maritime heritage can be discovered including stories of the ill-fated Titanic which set sail from the town. But perhaps more practically it also houses the perfect place for a refreshment stop at the Art House Café.
From here there is a 15 minute walk downwards to the old area of cobbled streets and ancient houses to the Tudor House Museum which reveals over 800 years of history. Guided tours for a small fee can be taken of the old house displaying Tudor life and its rich history as well as an opportunity to enjoy the Tudor knot garden outside as well as its café.
Further down overlooking the quay is an excellent restaurant, The Dancing Man Brewery in an old converted Wool House, or on the journey back up the hill you can visit the West Quay Shopping Centre with its indoor cafés.
