John Salvat – The History of Walled Gardens
3rd March 2019 at 7:30 pm
£3 – £5
Havens of sensuous pleasure, religious sanctuaries, estate supermarkets and a lure for Elizabeth I’s favours. Walled gardens have been an interesting window into social change over hundreds of years.
Competition to grow the most exotic fruits and flowers was initiated by exploration to the then unknown corners of the earth by Captain Cook and many others. The foundations of modern horticulture were based on creating the conditions to grow these in our climate.
This particular aspect of gardens covers its development across both the centuries and many countries. Our visual journey will include some stunning botanical illustrations.
