Film – The Art of Barbara Hepworth
3rd September 2017 at 7:30 pm£3 – £4
Barbara Hepworth was undoubtedly a sculptress who richly deserves her world wide reputation. She believed that the need to express ideas was as strong in a woman as in a man, and felt she did her best work in the 1940s. But the last decade of her life saw the fulfilment of her childhood dreams to do large work and figures arising from the ground, which she described as “life-giving, purposeful, a statement of the will to live, a testimony.” This film, narrated in Hepworth’s own words, examines the two forms which had a special meaning to her – the standing form with the tender relationship of the two forms to each other, and the closed form such as an oval sphere or pierced object.
