‘From the Stony River to the Sky’ – Alexander Calder Retrospective
Calder was one of the most influential & pioneering artists of the twentieth century, transforming the very nature of sculpture by introducing the ‘4th dimension’ into his work. Known primarily for his famous mobiles, he actually created a prolific body of work that extended to wire sculpture, carved figures, stabiles, standing mobiles, oil paintings, works on paper, jewellery, furniture and domestic objects, together with a number of monumental public commissions.
This show, at the award winning Hauser & Wirth Arts Complex, promises to be an outstanding exhibition, extending through all five gallery spaces and including over 80 exhibits, many on public view for the very first time.
We have a one and a half hour tour booked, under the direction of a Calder expert. There will then be time for a cup of tea, in the excellent (if a little expensive) restaurant/cafeteria on site. There are other gallery spaces and an interesting bookshop to view – and be sure to leave time to inspect the impressively planted and extensive garden space designed by the internationally renowned landscape architect Piet Oudolf.
(There are no picnic facilities on the H&W site itself).
